Background

The potential of AI extends far beyond commercial applications, with a profound capability to address pressing societal challenges. From mitigating climate change and improving healthcare access to reducing poverty and enhancing education, AI has the power to create tangible benefits for humanity. However, significant gaps remain in aligning AI methods with social good initiatives, particularly in underrepresented areas such as disaster response, environmental sustainability, and equitable resource distribution. The challenge lies not only in developing AI technologies but in deploying them ethically, equitably, and effectively to address these critical issues.

Topics

  • AI for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

  • AI in Global Health

  • AI for Inclusive Education, e.g., learners with disabilities, limited literacy, or lack of access to quality educational resources.

  • Bias and Risk Mitigation in AI Systems

  • AI-Powered Disaster Response and Recovery

  • AI for Sustainable Agriculture, Business, and Finance

  • AI for Social Governance

  • AI in Combating Misinformation and Fake News

  • AI for Accessible and Assistive Technologies

  • AI for Poverty Alleviation and Resource Distribution

  • AI for Urban Sustainability and Smart Cities

Highlights

While AI research has predominantly focused on advancing algorithms and models for performance-driven tasks, this session will emphasize context-driven applications that address complex societal problems. Key novelties include:

  • The integration of AI with human-centric approaches, focusing on societal needs and ethical deployment.

  • The exploration of low-resource AI solutions tailored for underrepresented and underserved communities.

  • Highlighting the use of multimodal AI systems for applications such as disaster prediction, resource allocation, and equitable healthcare delivery.

  • Discussions on measuring social impact using AI tools and developing frameworks to assess their effectiveness and ethical implications.

Evaluation Criteria

The evaluation of submitted papers will be guided by the following key questions:

a) Does the paper clearly demonstrate how AI contributes to addressing societal challenges?
b) Is the AI methodology or technique sound, rigorous, and well-justified?
c) Does the paper provide evidence of a positive societal impact (quantitative or qualitative)?
d) Is there a clear pathway to real-world implementation or deployment of the proposed AI solution?

Peer Review

The papers will be peer-reviewed by at least three independent reviewers with expertise in the area.

Paper Submission

Papers should be submitted through the Conference Management Toolkit (CMT). To submit to this special session, authors must create a new submission under the Main Track for IJCNN2025 and select "AI for Social Good" as the primary subject area.
